Membership Policy
Cascadia Con, as a North American Science Fiction Convention organized under the auspices of the World Science Fiction Society, will be following the traditions of past Worldcons and NASFiCs in terms of program participant memberships. The general guideline is as follows:
- Program participants pay for their memberships just like other convention members, volunteers, and committee.
- If the convention generates an adequate surplus, active program participants will have their memberships reimbursed after the convention.
- The following clarifications, conditions, and exceptions will apply.
- The number of panels required for reimbursement will be determined after the convention and will depend on the size of the overall convention surplus. (E.g. a small surplus means a higher number of panels would be required.) The objective is to be able to reimburse panelists who participate in at least four hours of programming.
- Program participants who are not "members of the science fiction fan community" but who offer unique skills or program opportunities may be given a pass for the day(s) of their program presentation. Typical examples might be working scientists, working professionals in the film or television industry, etc. (The definition of "members of the community" will be at the discretion of the program team. In general, people who attend other conventions will be considered members of the community.)
- Single person presentations will not be counted differently from panels with several program participants. However, at the discretion of the programming team, time required at-con for preparation may be counted.
- Failure to attend scheduled panels without reasonable notice will reduce the number of hours the participant will be considered to have done, for the purpose of this policy.
- At the discretion of the programming team, invited participants who volunteer to do enough panels but who are not actually scheduled may be considered to have met the reimbursement requirement.
-
- If the post-con surplus allows, reimbursements will be offered as thanks for participating in the convention program. Nothing in this policy can be considered a contractual offer, and membership reimbursement is not considered compensation for labor.
- The convention considers the convention experience itself to be an appropriate exchange for membership. Every Worldcon and NASFiC is in the position of having more qualified individuals wanting to participate in the program than there are program items available. No individual is more important than the convention as a whole, and no guarantees are offered to any individual about participation or number of hours to be scheduled (other than the convention schedule itself).
- There is no general policy regarding passes for family members of program participants. In exceptional cases the programming team may offer day passes to family members who are not members of the community on specific days.
