Pacific NW Bid Convention History

 

1950 the original Norwescon, Worldcon was held in Portland Oregon. Donald Day chaired this convention and the GOH was Anthony Boucher. There were 400 in attendance.

1959, Westercon 12 was held in the Seattle Moore Hotel, Chaired by F.M. Busby the GOH was Alan E. Nourse.

1960, Westercon is again in the Pacific Northwest, held in Boise Idaho at the Owyhee hotel with Guy and Diane Terwilleger co-chairing and Rog Phillips as the GOH.

In 1961, Seacon, Worldcon included Robert Heinlein and 305 (membership total was 507) SF fans who descended on the Emerald City to celebrate the Golden Age of Science Fiction. The Chair was Wally Weber.

1976, Seattle Northwest Science Fiction Society was born with the goal of hosting a Worldcon in 1981. It was soon realized that there was not enough trained talent in the area to staff a Worldcon so NWSFS started NorWesCon to “get some practice”. 1977, our friends in Vancouver BC host Westercon 30, Fran Skene chaired with GOH Damon Knight

1984, Westercon 37 is again in Portland. Harlan Ellison is the GOH and previous Seattle Westercon Chair F.M. Busby is the Fan GOH.

The Seattle Westercon Organizing Committee (SWOC) was created on November 4, 1990 with the specific mission of bidding for and running Westercon 46. More information can be found at: www.swoc.org

In 1993 Seattle hosted Westercon 46 at the Bellevue Redlion, Richard Wright was Chair, GOH was Greg Bear and once again F.M. Busby was a Fan GOH along with Wally Weber the 1961 Worldcon Chair.

June 30-July 3, 1995, Westercon 48, was hosted in Portland, Oregon, John Lorentz was Chair with GOHs; Vernor Vinge, Elayne Pelz , John R. Foster, Ray Villard.

July 3-6, 1997 Seattle hosted Westercon 50, The Once and Future Con, Sally Woehrle was Chair with GoHs: J. Michael Straczynski, Martin H. Greenberg, Amy Thomson; AGoH: Victoria Poyser-Lisi; Science GoH: Jack Cohen; MGoHs: Spider and Jeanne Robinson; FGoH: Walter J. Daugherty

November of 1998, Seattle regretfully withdraws from the Worldcon in 2002 race. More information can be found at http://sfnorthwest.org/seattle02/

July 7/02-7/06 1991, Westercon 44 is hosted in Vancouver BC at the University of British Columbia, Terry Fowler was the chair and the following GOH’s William Gibson; C.J. Cherryh ; Artist GOH Warren Oddsson.

July 2-5, 1999, Westercon 52, in Spokane, Washington, Empire Con, with Bob Ladd as chair and GOHs Barbara Hambly, Kristine Katherine Rusch.

In March of 2000, Corlfu, an annual convention of fanzine fans was held in the University Plaza hotel in Seattle Washington.

Memorial Day weekend, 2001, World Horor Convention 11, Seattle Marriott Sea-Tac Airport.

2001, Westercon 54 in Portland Oregon, Chair was Dean Koenig with GOH Tim Powers.
