“Taste of Clarion West”Writers WorkshopThe WorkshopIf you’ve thought about attending a Clarion West workshop and have a short story you’d like to critique, this workshop is for you. Join us for a great opportunity to get a taste of Clarion West while honing your craft with your fellow writers and our instructors. The Instructors
The WorkshopThe workshop will be organized into small groups of five or six students, each led by one or two instructors. In a Clarion-style workshop, everyone reads and critiques all the stories in advance of the workshop meeting. To register, each participant submits a story, and copies will be mailed to every participant in his or her group about a month before the con. At the workshop meeting itself, the participants and instructor sit in a circle. The instructor chooses which story to critique, and starting with the person next to the story's author, the other participants give their critiques (timed at two minutes each) , going around the circle. The author remains silent during his or her story's critique and the instructor always critiques last. Finally, the author has a chance to comment on the critiques and ask questions, and there is some time for general discussion.
Writers' WorkshopOkay. Here are the writers workshop details for all of you hard-working out there. We are offering two short story workshops: the Taste of Clarion, and Recombinant workshops. If you are new to work-shopping, the Taste of Clarion is probably your best option. This will take the form of an equal number of new and published writers, and will be a supportive learning experience. If you have already had experience with the Clarion West workshop or other professional workshop, the recombinant workshop may interest you. This will take the form of a small peer workshop in the Clarion West style. Submit up to 3500 words in manuscript format, and specify your choice of workshop. There is a five-dollar charge to cover copy and distribution costs. Submit short stories or synopses and your fee by August 19th to: Leslie Howle, c/o SFM, 330 6 th Ave N Suite 100 Seattle WA 98109-4613. Cascadia Con provides workshop space and two-and-a-half hour time slots on Sunday afternoon from 1 – 3:30, September 4 th at the convention. If you sign up for either type of workshop, please mail your manuscript and a $5 fee to cover copying and mailing costs to us by August 19th, 2005 although spaces may be available after that. We'll distribute copies to all participants, along with materials to help in preparing helpful comments. For more information on our Instructors, you can visit their websites:
