Spawns of Insomnia 2

Cascadia Con is pleased to host Spawns of Insomnia 2 — a comic book creating marathon! Watch dozens of caffeine-crazed cartoonists as they each attempt to draw their own 24-page science fiction/fantasy comic books in only 24 hours.

Organized by Cartoonists Northwest, the marathon is being used as a fundraiser for the Friends of the Seattle Public Library. All funds raised by Spawns artists will go to purchase graphic novels for the Seattle Public Library.

Last Kiss & Disney comics creator John Lustig and Cartoonists Northwest
President Scott Alan are coordinating Spawns for Cascadia Con. Lustig launched the first Spawns marathon in 2003. Of the 26 artists who competed, only nine hardy (and fast) souls were able to complete the marathon with a full 24 pages: Scott Alan, John Aquino, Bill Barnes, Donna Barr, Phil Foglio, Lillian Ripley, Dan McConnell, Mark Monlux, and Bill Morse.

To put this project in perspective, a single comic book page usually takes anywhere from half a day to two days to produce. We are asking each of these wonderful comic creators to produce a page an hour!! And do it 24 times!! To add to the stress and strain we are also asking them to produce these comics in front of thousands of people out in the open at a convention. To quote Spawns organizer John Lustig, "It's basically cartoonists in the wild -- in the primal state of creation."

Although each of the artists will be working 24 hours straight, they won’t all be working at the same time, explained Spawns Co-coordinator Scott Ball. Artists are being broken into groups with each group working a different day of the convention.

Curious about what a 24-hour comic looks like? Check out stories from the 2003 Spawns marathon on the Cartoonists Northwest website.

Prizes will be awarded for the first artist to complete an entire comic book as well as for best story. Prizes are being provided by the LiftPort Group, future developer of the “space elevator.”
