On Friday afternoon the SFM will also offer the following:

The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame’s

(there is no additional charge for educators coming Friday to this panel)

Introduction to Using Science Fiction in the Classroom (2 hours):  What is science fiction and how does it reflect, predict, and tell cautionary tales about societal and technological change?  Multidisciplinary approaches to literacy, science, English, sociology and technology are easily employed using science fiction as curriculum.  You’ll become familiar with a variety of rich lesson plans and the “Reading for the Future” science Fiction book study guides developed by SFM.  Hand outs available.

Leslie Howle Senior Manager, Education and Outreach, Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame; and Elizabeth Duffell, Curriculum Specialist, Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame

In alphabetical order scheduled presenters are C. J. Cherryh, Julie E. Czerneda, Dr Grace L. Dillon, Miki Garrison, Helen Barrows Gbala, Charlene C. Harmon, Leslie Howle, Robyn Meadows, R. Gary Raham, Joan Spicci Saberhagen,   Nisi Shawl, Gloria Skurzynski, David M. Silver, Ed Stiner, Dr Eric Swedin and Lynda Williams.

The Thursday conference is sponsored jointly by CascadiaCon and the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame. Membership includes all materials, an Educators Workbook and CD, and access to the Dealers Room, Art Show, Film Festival and Hospitality Suite.

Developing Literacy Using Science Fiction -- Literacy, at its heart, is the ability to communicate ideas through words. As a species, we use words with one another to tell stories. Stories provide context and emotion. We remember stories. We think about them. Science and technology are part of our lives, of critical relevance to everyone on this planet -- but where are their stories? How do we communicate our ideas, our wonder, and our concerns to one another? Learn how to use the "what if .?" approach of science fiction to explore science issues and consequences with your students. Teach them how to use reasoned speculation to examine the world around them, and the world to come.

Enhancing the total K-6 curriculum -- Basic humanities and science disciplines include elementary education, early childhood plus teaching children to enjoy reading, music, art, astrobiology, science fact, drama, language arts, community theatre, writing, world-building, history, psychology, computers, after school reading/writing clubs, ESL, high-risk students and special needs. Lesson plans include traditional Fairy Tales (Little Red Riding Hood, Rumplestiltskin, The Little Red Hen, etc...) and science fiction mythologies. This eclectic integrated approach has yielded very positive results to capture unmotivated readers.

The Foundation for the Preservation of Science Fiction and Fantasy Memorabilia (Portland Science Fiction Museum) is a working media center: books and magazines in the 'Research Library' section, DVDs, Video tape and laser discs in the viewing room theater and an online recommended lesson plan - booklist database.
